Summer 2009 Anime Season – First Impressions

So, I’m getting lazier as the days go by so no pics til the next episode of these animes come out.

Canaan – Rating: 9.9/10

- Damn. This was cool. It had a Darker than Black feel to it, although that’s probably because they were in Shanghai. Yea… Personally, I like the plot so far. Lots of things being thrown at you and therefore lots of questions unanswered. But hey, I like that kind of anime. It’s got a decent amount of action and blood AND…… the main character actually reloaded. Although only once, it’s still better than some animes (Valkyria) that appear to have several infinite ammo hax on.

- Characters: 10/10 – It’s hard for me to not like characters these days. They’d have to be like Makoto from School Days for them to get anything less than a 10.

- Music: 9.9/10 – I didn’t have my speakers up very high so I didn’t catch too much of the BG music. But, for the benefit of the doubt, let’s just give it 9.9.

- Story/Plot: 10/10 – Yea. Can’t complain here.

- Originality: 9.5/10 – I know it’s getting harder and harder to become original with the thousands of animes out there but damn Type-Moon. Must every main character lead have magical eyes in your works? I’m just glad they didn’t make CG. x_X”.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni – Rating: 8.7/10

- Ok, so this started a bit slow. A bit ‘happier’ than I’d like it to but all the Higurashi arcs started happy so I suppose this is forgivable. Basically, the episode was mostly character introduction, some bitch who won’t stop talking, the same bitch who hit her daughter then feels bad for doing so and searches for said daughter whom she abandoned in the garden. God, I hope she dies first. Maria’s adorable too. Well, as long as she doesn’t have those eyes. It’s always the goddamn eyes in this series. Gah. The last 4-5 minutes was the highlight for me. Something interesting happened. Maria recieved an umbrella from Beatrice, a witch that gave this whole family their fortune. So, I’m gonna safely assume this anime will be about faggots who, over their greed of money, kill each other and end up with nothing. I hope Maria gets something cool. Like a teddy bear. Or 1000 pieces of taiyaki. Ionno.

Characters: 8/10 – I’m sorry Maria. Your mom was like -50. So averaging it out… I’d say it’s around an 8.

Music: 9/10 – Or rather, the lack of it later. But hey, it adds emphasis. Yea, emphasis.

Story/Plot: 9.5/10 - I actually liked the Higurashi series alot. Although it was gorey, and dark, it was interesting to watch. Hopefully this will be just as entertaining.

Originality: 9/10 – So far, all I’ve seen is: family arrives at island, family discusses shit about money, old guy laughing hysterically at window/windowsill/dark clouds/statues, and a drawing of Beatrice. Some of that wasn’t even original >_>. Ah well. 9/10 anyways.

Sora no Manimani – Rating: 9.9/10

Damn. I’m a sucker for these kinds of shows. Slice o’ Life/RomComs. And for an added kicker, the main female lead happens to be super eccentric. God dammit. Aside from the massive obsession between the girl to the guy, there wasn’t anything bad about the first episode. I kinda wish they used that awesome piano piece played in their PVs. Long summary short, this anime’s about a girl who’s trying to get people to join the astronomy club. While doing so, an old childhood friend enters the same highschool as her and they are rejoined in an odd way or another. Yea. Maybe I should’ve explained the summary in Saku’s point of view…

Characters: 10/10 – Yea. Male lead is shitty as always. But the female lead makes up for the guy’s shittiness.

Music: 9.6/10 – I’m only disappointed about that piano piece. =[‘

Story/Plot: 10/10 – Considering this is a Slice o’ Life/RomCom, I don’t see how they can fail here.

Originality: 9.4/10 – This started sounding alot like Clannad in a dimension where everything was opposite. Like, Nagisa -> Super Eccentric. Tomoya -> Not so emo. Ionno. It also had that Kanon thing too with Ayu falling from the tree. I was like, “I’ve seen this before! She dies!”. But nope. I guess not huh.

Honorable Mentions:

Kanamemo – Wut is dis. Yuri + Slice o’ Life??? Damn. This was just awkward. The chief of the newspaper store happens to be lik 9 years old. The two lesbians kiss a little too often even though it had like 5x less yuri vibes than Strawberry Panic. Main character is kinda lame as always. Will probably learn to be more ‘outgoing’ as the anime continues. Yea… I’ll stick around til episode 3 or so.

GA Gaaksjhgkjasjasngja agkwjhbkljawg Design Club – Wow, I cannot for the love of god remember the full name of this show. But, it was crazy. Wild. WILD. Reminded me of Pani Poni Dash! Awesome stuff. Will watch when somewhat drunk or desperately bored.
